The new judge program to serve the needs of the country

The MTG Judge Mexico community is an organization dedicated to educate, teach, and mentor members inside the country to create quality judges

Where did we come from?

We didn't come out of nowhere(;

The MTG Judge México community arises from the need of a program that fits our specific needs and that is more useful for those interested in judging Magic: The Gathering tournaments

We aim to create quality judges, basing our program in the mentoring and leadership principles, as well as adding a human touch to Magic judging

This progam is focused on growth based on collaboration and continuous learning from all members. We content and resource creation in our language, collaborating with the rest of regions and program to have qualitu content that serves all of the members of the progam

Our values

We work under a set of values that define what we do, and why we do it that way

  • Inclusion

  • Mentoring

  • Transparency

  • Open to all voices

  • Candid and productive feedback

Our proposal

To solve the needs of our country and, at the same time, promote an structure that covers both the documents and rules knowledge as the soft skills that characterize a judge, we created a new certification system, based on categories and medals.

You can read more about the philosophy of this structure here.

Categories

There are 4 judge categories, each one focusing on a different type of event:

  • Regular Judges

    • A focus on Regular REL events, like prereleases, store championships, and FNMs

  • Competitive Judges

    • They cover the needs for stores running Competitive REL events, with a clear and competent understanding of documents like the IPG and the MTR

  • Advanced Judges

    • Their experience and involvement means we'll usually see them leading teams in conventions, ensuring all tournaments are run smoothly. They have a deeper understanding of Tournament Operations

  • Premiere Judges

    • Highly skilled and qualified judges, running the highest level of tournaments

Medals

We'll kick-off with 2 medals, expanding to fit broader areas as the program and it's members grow:

  • Leadership Medal

    • Judges that have demonstrated that they are not only capable of leading teams effectively, they have also shown a clear understanding of how to succeed in those positions and evaluate other people on them

  • Mentoring Medal

    • Because being a mentor goes beyond telling someone to read the docs. These judges have a clear interest in helping others grow and enrich their skillsets. Only judges with this medal can certify new judges

Each of these categories and medals have different processes and goals. To read more about the processes, you can read this blog post.

If you are a judge previously certified with Judge Academy and are interested in being part of this program, you can read about our carry-over process on this blog post.

Kick-off team

The team is composed of a group with broad experience in events and a deep regional involvement.

The responsibilities of each one varies a little but, but we can summarize them with the following:

Program Representative

Focused in all categories and areas across the program, looking to mantain a healthy organization. In charge of creating and mantaining all communication channels in México, as well as collaboration with other regions and Tournament Organizers. This person is the legal representative of the organization

Community Representative

In charge of ensuring that the needs of the community are met correctly, always looking for the greater good, focusing on the values that define us. They are also in charge of proposing new ideas for the development of the program

While the Program Representative position is a bit more permanent, due to legal reasons mainly, the Community Representative positions will be open for applications every 18 monts. The first wave of Community Representatives will open an application window 12 months after starting. If there are no changes with that wave, applications will re-open 6 months later
